Marvel Unveils Dark Reign, Ultimate Avengers, Marvel Noir at Retailer Summit On Monday, September 8, Marvel Comics wowed Diamond & Alliance Game Distributors’ 2008 Retailer Summit in Las Vegas with the announcement of three major projects poised to keep customers coming back to comic shops throughout 2009.
Please Note: This report combines information released at the Summit with additional material announced on Marvel.com.
Dark Reign Masterminded by Secret Invasion architect Brian Michael Bendis, this new branding tag line will grace the covers of key Marvel books in the wake of the Skrull Invasion to herald a frightening new status quo for the Marvel Universe. On Marvel.com, Bendis promises something “completely different than anything you've ever seen at Marvel before,” with new alliances, new teams and a new world dynamic as creators take characters into new and unexpected directions, such as Dark Avengers, written by Bendis and illustrated by Mike Deodato.
Ultimate Avengers Writer Mark Millar will undertake this new ongoing, team-focused series, which will have a format unlike anything Ultimate Universe readers have ever seen, making it what Millar calls in a Marvel.com release “the pulse at the heart of the Ultimate Universe.” Expect a setting in which Nick Fury assembles different teams for different missions, higher profiles for such background characters as Ultimate Blade and Ultimate Punisher, and a host of Ultimate incarnations of classic Marvel Universe villains, all rendered by a top secret roster of artists!
Marvel Noir For anyone who was ever curious about how the Marvel Universe would look when viewed through the lens of authors like Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett, Marvel will re-imagine some of its key heroes in the rough-&-tumble 1930s with three hard-boiled limited series. Written by David Hine with art by Carmine Di Giandomenico, Spider-Man Noir introduces readers to a young, angry Peter Parker going head-to-head with the local crime boss, Goblin, while making time with Felicia Hardy, the series femme fatale. In X Men Noir, writer Fred Van Lente and artist Dennis Calero pit the students from the Xavier School for Wayward Youth against New York City Chief of Detectives, Eric Magnus, and his police within the police, the Brotherhood. Daredevil Noir, written by Alexander Irvine and illustrated by Tomm Coker, pits Matt Murdock against the brutal hoods of the period, and features Marvel Noir versions of Foggy Nelson, Wilson Fisk, the Owl and Bullseye. Additionally, fans can expect a one of Marvel's most popular mutants to make his appearance in Wolverine Noir, set to debut later in 2009.
